Road Trip!

I've been on a few road trips in my adult life (Preston, Las Vegas, Denver). All three were fantastic times.

I went to Preston to see a friend from Basic Training. He got married and I was invited so I spent the night in Preston.

Las Vegas was a lot of fun. Like the South, you couldn't pay me enough to live there.

As we all know, Ashley lives in Denver. Back in the summer of 2006, Michelle and I took a little road trip to visit the fair city of Denver.

I've always listened to albums while on road trips. I'm about to go on a road trip and I'm going to make a play list. It's going to be called the Blow Your Mind List.

I would like to ask my reader(s) a question: What songs have blown your mind? I don't want to limit this to any time period or genre. Opinions are welcome. Submit as many songs as you would like.

Your post makes me laugh. Primarily because I belong to a Facebook group titled "That Song Blew My Mind!" (no joke), in the which we discuss cool music, artists, and other such subjects. While I've not compiled a list of my own (I'm working on one), I thought that you might appreciate what others had to say under the discussion topic "Top Ten Driving Songs":

Nick:
10. Welcome Home - Coheed and Cambria
9. Say Anything (Else) - Cartel
8. Lazy Eye - Silversun Pickups
7. Last Summer - Lost Prophets
6. Transatlanticism - Death Cab For Cutie
5. Chase This Light - Jimmy Eat World
4. Web - The Roots
3. Idioteque - Radiohead
2. Creatures (For A While) - 311
1. Fix You - Coldplay

Katherine:
01. Tiny Vessels- Death Cab For Cutie
02. Livin' On A Prayer- Bon Jovi
03. Hotel California- The Eagles
04. Stockholm Syndrome- Muse
05. Every Thug Need A Lady- Alkaline Trio (though pretty much any Alkaline Trio song I'll take)
06. Konstantine- Something Corporate
07. Hurts So Good- John Cougar Mellencamp
08. 3am- Matchbox 20
09. If You Could Only See- Tonic
10. Your Winter- Sister Hazel

Jeremy (not me):
1- Ties That Bind - Alter Bridge
2- Call To Arms - Angels & Airwaves
3- Felling Lucky - Jimmy Eat World
4- If You Don't Don't - Jimmy Eat World
5- Such Great Heights - Postal Service
6- Time After Time - Quietdrive

I have one song that totally blew me away when I had the opportunity to hear it performed live. I know I'll sound like a nerd when I say this, but it's the first movement from Gustav Mahler's Third ("Creation") Symphony. It's not the kind of thing you'd listen to as accompanying music for a road trip if you're really wanting to get a musical punch from it, though.
The whole symphony depicts various aspects of the creation; the first movement is the battle between light and dark, order and chaos. When I heard it for the first time I was images of what the War in Heaven might have been like. Pretty powerful stuff, if you want to take the time to sit down and really listen to it.

I have certain albums which are specific to geography. Por ejemplo:

1) 1000 Years - Sting. This is reserved for the stretch between Phoenix and Tucson, and best enjoyed during the hours of 4-7am.

2) Steve Miller Band - Greatest Hits. Anytime after Filmore, going through southern Utah. You should be done with it before you hit another state. Especially "Keep on Dancin." You may repeat this song as often as needed.

3) On your way to Yellowstone or Grand Teton National Park, you must wait until you see the real evergreens and peaks you seek. Then you must play Joshua Tree - U2. You will be surprised and delighted.

4) If you go to Denver again, remember to give A Fever You Can't Sweat Out - Panic at the Disco, a good play. You must never forget.

5) Going to Vegas? I recommend Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Full Moon Fever.

6) If you go to a place like Texas, you might be surprised how much you want to listen to Death Cab for Cutie. I don't know why, but Plans really hit the spot.

7) And no CA road trip is complete without one good whirl of Blue - Weezer. Remember your west coast roots.

8) If traveling with parents, you may treat all the crew members with some Beach Boys Greatest Hits. You will discover their charm and not hate them so much.

9) Bear Lake? That Thing You Do soundtrack. Yep.

10) And lastly, If going to Michigan, try to get a hold of my cousin's mix tape of "Only Fools Rush In" by UB40 and listen to it about 40 times. Only then will you feel my pain.

But if you want to enjoy the trip to Michigan, find Sufjan Steven's "Michigan" album. It is stunning.

So there you have it. Hope you have fun. Remember, other people have great music to share and that's a lion's share of the fun of the road trip: discovering the music of the road, yours and friends'.
